My wife and I took our daughter to the Rainforest Café today. Our daughter loves all of the mechanical animals and the whole rainforest theme, and I like it too. Conversely, my wife hates theme restaurants. Also, since our daughter is three years-old we have been to the Rainforest Café four times in the last two years- twice at the one in Chicago and twice in Schaumburg. Unfortunately, each time we have dined there, my wife and I have both been unhappy with the food. Somehow the restaurant manages to ruin every meal we have tried including fajitas, ribs, a Reuben, and a chicken sandwich. Even the nachos appetizer is bland and served with artificial guacamole. Additionally, their specialty drinks are over-priced and weak.
During this visit, I decided to just have a burger and fries, usually the safest meal if the restaurant’s dishes are bad. The burger was fine, as I hoped, but the fries were cold and unappealing. Also, my wife ordered a Reuben and was quite disappointed.
Overall, the atmosphere is unique and great for kids with giant, salt water aquariums full of tropical fish and realistic mechanical animals. However, though the menu appears to offer appealing dishes, most of the items are bland and overpriced. If you have to go to the Rainforest Café, order a burger or a salad with a bottled beverage or a fountain drink.
