When dining in Evanston, many restaurants can be found in downtown Evanston on Sherman and Davis streets. They say ‘location, location, location,’ and perhaps the strangest location for a fine dining restaurant is Chef’s Station. This Evanston restaurant is located under the Davis Street train station. Despite the restaurant’s unusual location, this restaurant has some of the best gourmet food in Evanston. Additionally, it’s fully stocked wine cellar is showcased during fundraisers and events throughout the year. The restaurant is definitely worth the trip under the tracks. Another restaurant with unusual features is Lucky Platter. While Lucky Platter is in a normal location- Main Street, Evanston, it’s interior is unusual. The interior design of the Lucky Platter is perhaps the most unusual in Evanston. The interior has been described as eclectic or post-hippie. Do not let the aluminum foil balls glued to the ceiling fool you though, the Lucky Platter is a great Evanston restaurant with a loyal following for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Visitors new to the Lucky Platter may stare at the paint by number paintings on the walls or the wait staff with long hair in jeans and T-shirts, but first-time visitors always seem to love the food. Be sure to check out the Lucky Platter, if you are looking for a different Evanston dining experience. An unexpected Evanston restaurant favorite is Hecky’s Barbecue. This restaurant is an Evanston icon, though it is located outside of downtown. The restaurant is carry-out or delivery only (limited delivery hours), but Hecky’s Barbecue offers possibly the finest barbecue ribs in the area. Hecky’s is also a Northwestern University favorite, and it’s offerings are sold at university sporting events. In fact during Northwestern’s Rose Bowl appearance, the mayor of Evanston bet the rival mayor Hecky’s ribs as lunch for the opposing team if Northwestern lost.
